Baptism is the same as the Old Testament’s laying on of hands, as when hands were laid on the heads of the sacrificial offerings in accordance to the sacrificial system of the Tabernacle. For sinners to bring forth these sacrificial offerings before the altar of burnt offering, to lay their hands on them and thereby confess their sins and pass them onto their sacrificial offering; for high priest to confess all the sins of the people of Israel and to pass them onto the sacrificial offerings for the Israelites and for themselves; and for Jesus to be baptized by John the Baptist in the New Testament’s time—all these things match with one another. I finally realized that Jesus thus received His baptism (laying of hands) in order to take upon Himself all the sins of the world and to make everyone’s sins disappear. 

So I looked up the original Scriptural texts. I looked up how the phrase, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness,” is written in Greek “แผŒฯ†ฮตฯ‚ แผ„ฯฯ„ฮน, ฮฟแฝ•ฯ„ฯ‰ฯ‚ ฮณแฝฐฯ ฯ€ฯฮญฯ€ฮฟฮฝ แผฯƒฯ„แฝถฮฝ แผกฮผแฟ–ฮฝ ฯ€ฮปฮทฯแฟถฯƒฮฑฮน ฯ€แพถฯƒฮฑฮฝ ฮดฮนฮบฮฑฮนฮฟฯƒฯฮฝฮทฮฝ.” In this phrase, “for thus” and “righteousness” are equivalent to “hoo’-tos gar (ฮฟแฝ•ฯ„ฯ‰ฯ‚ ฮณแฝฐฯ)” and “dikaiosune (ฮดฮนฮบฮฑฮนฮฟฯƒฯฮฝฮทฮฝ)” in Greek. The former means “in this way,” “appropriately,” “only by this method,” “the most fitting,” or “on this fashion.” And the latter means, “righteousness, justification or equity acceptable to God.”

It told us that Jesus saved sinners from their sins. It told us that Jesus fulfilled the righteousness of God by being baptized and shedding His blood. It means, in other words, that He took upon all our sins with His baptism. All our puzzles were thus solved, for we now realized the true meaning of what had caused us so much confusion and wandering. It is because Jesus took upon all our sins with His baptism that He went to the Cross and died on it as the judgement of these sins. This was the truth found in the gospel of the water and the Spirit. 

We, the born-again, came to realize, in other words, that the baptism that Jesus received from John was the indispensable constituent of our salvation, and that He took upon the sins of the world onto Himself all at once with this baptism. You also have to realize the same truth in the gospel of the water and the Spirit. Only then your souls can be lighted.  

We cannot, in fact, ever forget the day when Jesus received baptism from John. We cannot ever forget the day when we realized that all our sins were actually passed onto Jesus. We have seen the changes that occurred in our hearts with our realization of this truth. They spread throughout our hearts like waves fanning out in a lake. Piercing through the darkness, the bright light of dawn entered us, allowing us to know the truth of salvation.
